The ATOMAI project benefits opportunely from several advantages that will ensure its development in the best possible way, compared to other projects of the same type elsewhere in Africa.
The main opportunities for the ATOMAI project can be summarised as follows:
- The proximity of ATOMAI Project to the Middle East and North and West Africa and Europe consumers (less than one week’s sailing time for mineral ships) considering their growing demands for Direct Reduction Pellets.
- Saudi Iron and Steel Company (HADEED) is committed to be one of the primary customer for the project as part of its projected growth
- The use of SNIM’s existing infrastructure (e.g. SNIM’s rail and port facilities) which significantly reduces investment costs and optimizes CAPEX and OPEX.
- Labor costs are low in Mauritania compared to other countries.
- Availability of high qualified and skilled manpower in the mining sector.
- The ATOMAI High Grade Direct Reduction Pellets (HGDRP) respect the environment and do not contain significant dust or contaminants.
- The Mauritanian government’s good experience of partnership in the mining industry, which significantly reduces risks compared to other investment opportunities in Africa.
- Another advantage likely to secure the energy supply of the ATOMAI project, is the possibility offered to TAKAMUL to connect its power plants in Zouerate and Nouadhibou to the national grid expected to be operational by the end of 2022.
- With the recent discovery of offshore gas in Mauritania, the steel industry development becomes possible, thanks to the manufacturing of the ATOMAI High Grade Direct Reduction Pellets (HGDRP).
- Mauritania, with its vast expanses of desert has enormous solar and wind capacities and is therefore ideally suited to become one of the largest producers of renewable clean energy and green hydrogen at competitive cost. This is a great opportunity for the Atomai project which could have a source of renewable energy that respects the environment.
- The new energy source based on green hydrogen will allow TAKAMUL to go further in the added value by transforming part of its exports into Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) pellets and green steel.
- Mauritania’s climate of political stability and security is a key factor in promoting investment in the country and a prerequisite for sustainable development.
